OpenAI has launched a major education initiative in India called the “India-first Learning Accelerator”. The goal is to promote AI-based education across the country.
Under this program, IIT Madras will receive a research grant of ₹4.5 crore,
and 5 lakh free ChatGPT Plus licenses will be provided to teachers and students, mainly in government schools and AICTE-recognized institutions.
This initiative is designed to help teachers and students in course planning, digital skill development,
and interactive learning, paving the way for India to become a leader in AI-powered education.
IIT Madras Receives ₹4.5 Crore Grant
As part of the project, OpenAI has granted ₹4.5 crore to IIT Madras.
The institute will use this funding to conduct research in cognitive neuroscience and AI-based education reforms.
The findings from this research will be shared publicly so that more people and institutions can benefit from it.
5 Lakh Free ChatGPT Plus Accounts for Teachers and Students
OpenAI, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, AICTE, and ARISE Schools, will distribute 5 lakh free ChatGPT Plus accounts to government school teachers and students in technical colleges.
With these accounts, users can:
Create lesson plans
Ask subject-related questions
Prepare teaching content
Use AI for interactive learning
Essentially, ChatGPT will work as a personal AI tutor for both teachers and learners.

In India, a ChatGPT Plus subscription costs ₹1,999 per month (including GST).
The plan offers access to advanced models like GPT-4 and GPT-5, which are not available in the free version.
