India’s digital payments are growing at record speed. But with more transactions come more failed payments, refund delays and customer complaints.

To handle this surge, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has introduced a new AI-powered system called FiMI.

The goal is simple — make UPI-related queries and disputes easier to solve.

The system was unveiled at the India AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi.

What Is FiMI and Why It Matters

FiMI is a small language model developed in-house by NPCI.

Unlike generic AI tools, FiMI is specially trained on India’s digital payments ecosystem.

It understands how UPI works, why transactions fail, and how disputes are resolved.

Digital payments require accuracy and quick responses.

Even small mistakes can cause confusion or financial loss.

FiMI has been designed to reduce such errors and improve the overall online payment experience.

How FiMI Helps UPI Users

FiMI is integrated into the UPI Help Assistant.

Users can simply type their questions in normal language.

The tool will provide clear, step-by-step guidance if they face issues like:

Failed payments

Delayed transactions

Chargebacks

Refund-related queries

This means you no longer have to call customer care or scroll through long help menus.

The system is built to give accurate and rule-based responses instantly.

Available in Multiple Languages

At present, FiMI supports four languages:

Hindi

English

Telugu

Bengali

NPCI plans to add more Indian languages in the next six to eight months.

This move will make digital support more accessible across the country.

A Step Toward Smarter Digital Payments

As online payments grow, so do service requests and disputes.

NPCI aims to reduce pressure on support systems by handling queries at scale through AI.

FiMI is not just meant to answer basic questions.

It is designed to guide users properly according to payment rules and regulations.

NPCI has also released a technical paper explaining how FiMI works.

The aim is to promote transparency and responsible AI usage.

With this launch, NPCI is taking another step toward making India’s digital payment system faster, smarter and more user-friendly.
