Apple is all set to launch the iPhone 17 series in less than a week. Along with this, many old iPhone users are waiting for the rollout of the new iOS 26 update.
Apple has finalized its rollout plan, but this update will not be available for several older iPhone models.
This means those devices will no longer receive new features or security updates.
iPhones Losing Support
Apple has officially announced a list of 11 older iPhone models that will not get iOS 26 or any future updates. These include:
iPhone X, XR, XS, XS Max
iPhone 8, 8 Plus
iPhone 7, 7 Plus
iPhone 6s, 6s Plus
iPhone SE (1st Gen)
All these models will continue running on their last available iOS version. Usually, Apple provides software updates for 5–6 years before discontinuing support.
Impact of No Updates
Without software or security updates, old iPhones face two major issues:
App Compatibility: Developers design apps for the latest iOS versions, so older phones often cannot run new apps properly.
Security Risks: No security patches mean devices are more vulnerable to hacking and other threats.
What Should Users Do?
If your iPhone is on the discontinued list, upgrading to a newer model is the best option. Models released after iPhone 13 will continue to get updates for the next 3–4 years.
For longer support and the latest features, you can wait for the iPhone 17 series, launching on September 9, which will come with the newest software and technology.
