If you haven’t filed your Income Tax Return (ITR) yet, make sure to do it soon.
The final deadline to file your ITR is July 31, 2024, and it is unlikely that the Income Tax Department will extend this date.
Issues with E-Filing and Increased Filings
Many taxpayers have faced issues with the e-filing portal this year. Despite these technical problems, the possibility of extending the deadline is low.
As of July 22, 2024, the Income Tax Department reported that 4 crore people had filed their ITRs.
This is a higher number compared to the same date last year, when it took until July 24 to reach this figure.
The department expects more people to file their ITRs by the end of July this year compared to the 6.77 crore who filed by the end of July last year.
Department’s Response to E-Filing Issues
There have been complaints from taxpayers and Chartered Accountant Associations about issues with the e-filing portal.
The Income Tax Department is actively working to address these problems and is in constant contact with service providers like Infosys, IBM, and Hitachi.
The Chairman of the CBDT has assured that efforts are being made to resolve these issues to improve the process.
If you do not file your ITR by July 31, you will have until December 31 to pay any penalty along with the fine.
The department is encouraging everyone to file their ITRs promptly.
