In a big relief for many households, the government has made it easier to buy small LPG cylinders.

You can now purchase a 5 kg LPG cylinder without submitting address proof.

All you need is a valid ID.

This change is especially helpful for migrant workers, students, and people who frequently move and don’t have permanent address documents.

Strong Demand: Lakhs of Cylinders Sold in Days

The response to this move has been quick and massive. Since March 23, more than 5.7 lakh 5 kg cylinders have already been sold.

On some days, sales have crossed 71,000 units, and in recent updates, the total has even gone beyond 6.6 lakh.

These small cylinders, also known as Free Trade LPG (FTL), are now easily available at LPG distributors across the country.

Why This Decision Was Taken

The government introduced this step to tackle rising demand and make cooking fuel more accessible.

Key reasons include:

Making LPG available without paperwork hassles

Reducing pressure on regular 14.2 kg cylinders

Ensuring fair and wider distribution during high demand

This move also helps fill supply gaps while keeping the system running smoothly.

What Makes 5 kg Cylinders Different?

These smaller cylinders are designed for convenience and flexibility.

Here’s what you should know:

Easily available over-the-counter

No address proof required

Sold at market price (no subsidy)

Ideal for short-term or emergency use

They are a practical option for those who need quick and temporary access to cooking gas.

How Supply Is Being Managed

To keep things under control, the government is also taking steps to balance supply and demand.

Major oil companies like Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum are working together to ensure smooth distribution.

Other measures include:

Limiting commercial LPG supply to 70% of earlier levels

Monitoring to prevent hoarding and black marketing

Despite high demand, officials say there is no nationwide LPG shortage.

What This Means for You

This new rule makes LPG more accessible than ever.

You can now get a cylinder quickly without worrying about paperwork.

It’s a helpful option if you don’t have a permanent address or need gas for a short period.

However, keep in mind that these cylinders are non-subsidised, so they may cost more than regular LPG refills.
