The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has made significant changes to the process of purchasing SIM cards.
The new rules aim to make it easier and more secure for customers to buy SIM cards from telecom providers such as Airtel, Jio, BSNL, and Vi.
These updates have made the entire process paperless, ensuring greater convenience and minimizing the risk of fraud for Indian users.
No Need to Visit Stores Anymore
One of the key changes is that users no longer need to visit a telecom company’s office to buy a SIM card or change their telecom operator.
The process has now shifted entirely online. Whether you’re getting a new SIM card or switching operators, document verification can be done digitally, offering a hassle-free experience.
DoT’s Digital Push
The government shared information about these new rules on X (formerly Twitter). The main goal of these changes is to prevent fraud while making it easier to obtain SIM cards.

The initiative supports India’s push towards becoming a more digitally secure nation.
With the introduction of e-KYC (electronic Know Your Customer) and self-KYC options, users can now handle everything online, including switching from prepaid to postpaid plans and vice versa, without needing to visit a physical store.
Reduced Fraud and Enhanced Security
The new system also ensures that people’s documents are not misused.
By preventing the creation of fake SIM cards, the updated process aims to significantly reduce fraud in the telecom sector.
