Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav informed Parliament on Wednesday about the rules for carrying luggage while travelling by train.
He said that passengers who carry luggage beyond the prescribed limit will have to pay an additional fee. This information was shared in a written reply to a question asked by Telugu Desam Party (TDP) MP Vemireddy Prabhakar Reddy.
The minister clarified that Indian Railways has fixed maximum luggage limits for each travel class, and charges will apply if these limits are exceeded.
Luggage Limits Based on Travel Class
According to the Railway Minister, different weight limits are set for different classes of travel. The maximum luggage allowed for passengers is as follows:
Second Class: Up to 35 kg free, up to 70 kg with a fee
Sleeper Class: Up to 40 kg free, maximum limit of 80 kg
AC 3 Tier / Chair Car: Up to 40 kg free, subject to the maximum allowed limit
AC 2 Tier / First Class: Up to 50 kg free, maximum limit of 100 kg
AC First Class: Up to 70 kg free, up to 150 kg with a fee
Size Limits for Trunks, Suitcases, and Boxes
The minister also said that trunks, suitcases, and boxes can be carried as personal baggage in train compartments if they are within the allowed size. The maximum permitted dimensions are:
Length: 100 centimeters
Width: 60 centimeters
Height: 25 centimeters
Booking Baggage in Brake Van or Parcel Van
If any baggage exceeds the prescribed size limits, it must be booked in a brake van (SLR) or a parcel van. Such baggage is not allowed to be carried inside passenger compartments.
The minister also made it clear that carrying commercial goods in compartments as personal luggage is strictly prohibited.
