Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey has launched a new messaging app called Bitchat, now available for download on the Apple App Store for iPhone users. The most unique feature of this app is that it works without the internet.
How Bitchat Works Without the Internet
Bitchat uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) Mesh Networking instead of Wi-Fi or mobile data.
This technology allows nearby phones (within about 30 meters) to connect and form a local network.
As people move, their phones help pass along messages to others — like a message relay system — making it possible to send messages across longer distances without any internet.
No Sign-Up Needed, Fully Encrypted
You don’t need to register, enter a phone number, or provide an email to use Bitchat. There is no central server, and all messages are stored only on the user’s device.
These messages automatically delete after some time. The app also uses end-to-end encryption, ensuring that messages stay private and secure.
Useful in Emergencies, But Use with Caution
Since it doesn’t rely on the internet, Bitchat can be especially helpful during emergencies, in remote areas, or during internet shutdowns.
However, a warning has also been issued. On Bitchat’s official GitHub page, Jack Dorsey has mentioned that the app has not yet undergone any external security audit,
and it may still have security flaws. So, users are advised not to fully trust it yet or use it for important communications until it is properly tested.
