There is good news for people with health insurance.

Patients will no longer have to wait for hours for treatment approval or discharge from hospitals.

The insurance regulator IRDAI has introduced new rules to speed up the process.

These rules aim to make cashless treatment quicker and smoother for policyholders.

New Time Limits for Claim Approval

To reduce delays, strict timelines have now been set:

Pre-authorization approval: Within 1 hour

Final claim approval at discharge: Within 3 hours

This means hospitals can start treatment faster, and patients can leave without unnecessary waiting.

The goal is simple—ensure timely care and reduce stress during emergencies.

Health Insurance Sector Growing Rapidly

The health insurance sector in India is expanding quickly.

In the financial year 2024–25, the industry is expected to grow by around 9%, with total premiums crossing ₹1.2 trillion.

This growth is driven by:

Increased health awareness

Better access to healthcare financing

Rising need for financial protection against medical costs

Claim Settlement Getting Better

Insurance companies are improving how they settle claims.

FY 2024–25: 87.5% claims settled

FY 2023–24: 82.46%

FY 2022–23: 85.66%

This shows a positive trend, with more claims being approved over time.

Why Insurance Premiums Are Increasing

While services are improving, premiums are also going up

Here’s why:

Age factor: Higher age means higher risk and higher premium

Higher coverage: People are choosing bigger sum insured for serious illnesses

Extra features: New policies include benefits like OPD and wellness services

Complaints Being Resolved Faster

As per IRDAI’s Bima Bharosa portal, over 1.37 lakh complaints were filed in FY 2025.

The good news is that 93% of these complaints were resolved within the same year, showing faster response from insurers.

Why Some Claims Still Get Rejected

Despite improvements, not all claims are approved.

Common reasons include:

Co-payment clauses

Sub-limits on treatments

Room rent limits

Non-medical expenses

Before buying any policy, it is important to read all terms carefully.

If something is unclear, ask the insurer to avoid problems later.

Overall, the new rules are a big step toward making health insurance more reliable and user-friendly, especially during emergencies when every minute matters.
