The central government will introduce a new GST registration system starting November 1, 2025, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced on Friday.
The move aims to make the registration process easier for small businesses and public sector entities.
Under this system, small businesses with a monthly tax liability below ₹2.5 lakh will no longer have to complete the registration manually.
Instead, their applications will be automatically approved within a few working days, saving both time and effort.
According to a News18 report, Ranjit Mahtani, partner at Dhruva Advisors, said this new registration scheme is part of the government’s GST 2.0 reforms.
The system is expected to ease the workload of both taxpayers and field offices, as most applications will be processed automatically.
Focus on GSTN Portal and GST 2.0 Reforms
Experts believe the simplified process will allow tax authorities to focus more on high-risk cases that require deeper investigation.
However, the success of the new system will depend heavily on the GSTN portal’s performance, given the history of technical issues.
The GST 2.0 framework was implemented on September 22, 2025.
Under this new structure, the government has reduced the number of GST tax slabs from four to two—5% and 18%.
The 12% and 28% slabs have been removed, while a special 40% tax slab has been introduced for luxury and sin goods.
