The Delhi government is planning to replace the current smart cards for driving licenses (DL) and vehicle registration certificates (RC) with electronic cards.
These new electronic cards will be easy to use and can be printed similarly to Aadhaar cards.
Benefits of the New Scheme
According to an official from the Delhi Transport Department, this initiative, inspired by a similar scheme in Rajasthan, aims to digitize the smart card system.
Transport Minister Kailash Gehlot introduced this plan to address the delays in issuing registration certificates.
He expressed concerns about these delays and directed immediate action to improve the process.
Easy Access with Electronic Cards
The new electronic cards will make it easier for applicants to manage their documents. Similar to Aadhaar cards, individuals will be able to print their own electronic documents.
Each card will have a unique ID and a QR code, allowing the traffic police to verify documents quickly.
Additionally, the documents will be available on platforms like DigiLocker and the mParivahan app, ensuring that people can access and present their documents whenever needed.
High Volume of Licenses and RCs Issued
Between 2023 and 2024, the Delhi Transport Department issued approximately 1.6 lakh driving licenses and 6.69 lakh registration certificates.
Moving forward, all these documents will be issued electronically under the new scheme.
Transition to Digital RCs
Transport Minister Kailash Gehlot has directed officials to explore the digital RC system further.
This scheme will offer better services to Delhi residents by providing PDF versions of important documents on the Transport Service Portal.
These digital documents will have QR codes for easy verification, and applicants will receive links to access them via their registered mobile numbers.
