Netflix users with second- and third-generation Apple TVs will no longer be able to access the app after July 31, 2024. These models, launched over a decade ago, lack the Apple App Store, making it impossible to update or install newer apps.
To continue using Netflix, users will need to switch to newer devices such as the latest Apple TV models, Roku, Fire TV, Android TV, or any smart TV that supports the Netflix app.
Reason for Discontinued Support
According to a report by MacRumors, Netflix has informed its customers via email that support for second- and third-generation Apple TVs will cease to “maintain the best Netflix experience.”
The company has updated its support page to reflect this change, emphasizing that Netflix will no longer be available on these older Apple TV models after the specified date.
Obsolete Apple Products
Apple considers the first three generations of Apple TVs as ‘obsolete.’ This classification is applied to products that Apple has stopped selling and servicing for over seven years.
In line with this, Netflix has previously discontinued support for older devices, including some Samsung and Vizio smart TVs and first-generation Roku boxes in 2019.
Future Plans for Netflix
Netflix has also clarified that it has no plans to develop a dedicated app for the Apple Vision Pro headset. Additionally, users will not be able to run the Netflix app on the iPad when using the Apple Vision Pro.
For uninterrupted access to Netflix, users are encouraged to upgrade to a compatible device before the July 31, 2024 deadline.
