Nepal is preparing to make major changes to its old rules on Indian currency notes. The country is in the final stages of lifting the ban on Indian notes of denominations above ₹100.
This step is expected to make travel, trade, and remittances easier between India and Nepal. The Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) will soon issue an official notification regarding this change.
Nepal Rastra Bank to Issue Official Notification Soon
NRB spokesperson Guru Prasad Paudel said that the process of publishing the notification in the Nepal Gazette is almost complete. After the notification is published, a circular will be sent to banks
and financial institutions explaining the new rules. While the exact date for implementing these rules has not yet been fixed, the process has reached its final stage.
RBI Rule Change Paved the Way
This decision comes after an important amendment made by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on November 28, which was published in the Gazette of India on December 2, 2025.
Under the new rules, individuals can carry Indian currency notes up to ₹100 in any amount between India and Nepal. In addition, notes of denominations above ₹100, up to a total value of ₹25,000, are also allowed to be carried across the border.
Ban Was Imposed After 2016 Demonetization
After India’s demonetization in 2016, Nepal imposed a strict ban on high-denomination Indian currency notes due to security concerns and fears of counterfeit currency.
This caused problems for travelers and traders crossing the border. In many cases, people faced fines or even detention for unknowingly violating the rules.
Relief for Travelers and Boost to Economic Activity
The proposed change is expected to bring major relief to travelers, small traders, and working people who frequently cross the India-Nepal border.
Experts believe this move will speed up economic activity between the two countries and make daily transactions smoother and more convenient.
