Mumbai Rains: Heavy Rainfall Disrupts City, Schools Shut, Red Alert Issued

Mumbai is facing severe disruption due to heavy rains. On Monday, the city recorded 177 mm of rainfall within just 6 to 8 hours. Vikhroli saw 139.5 mm, Santacruz 129.1 mm, and Juhu 128.5 mm of rain.

Because of the bad weather, the Maharashtra government has declared a holiday for all schools and colleges in Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg to ensure the safety of students and staff.

The continuous heavy rain in Mumbai and nearby areas has affected normal life. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the city.

Waterlogging on roads has led to major traffic issues. In many areas, including the Andheri subway, traffic has completely stopped. The subway was closed for more than 6 hours, forcing people to take alternate routes.

The rains have also affected air travel. Indigo Airlines issued a warning for passengers, stating that due to waterlogging and traffic jams on the roads to the airport, flights are delayed. Officials have advised people to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary.

High Tide Warning

A high tide of 3.74 meters is expected in Mumbai at 9:17 am today. This, combined with the continuous rainfall, may worsen the situation.

High tide raises the sea level, making it harder for rainwater to drain out, leading to more waterlogging in low-lying areas.

Indigo Issues Passenger Advisory

The heavy rains have disrupted flight operations. Indigo Airlines has told passengers that many roads to the airport are waterlogged and traffic is moving slowly.

This has caused delays in both arriving and departing flights. The airline advised passengers to leave early for the airport and to keep checking their flight status online. Indigo also apologized for the inconvenience caused.

Government and Officials on Alert

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis conducted a review meeting and asked all officials to stay on high alert. He requested people not to leave their homes unless necessary.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has asked citizens to call helpline number 1916 in case of any emergency.
