Meta launches Ad-Free Subscription for Social Media users

Facebook and Instagram are two of the most popular social media platforms worldwide. People use them for entertainment, connecting with friends, and staying informed.

Until now, these platforms were completely free—but that’s changing. Users will now have the option to pay a monthly fee to access an ad-free experience.

In the UK, Meta has launched a subscription that allows users to browse Facebook and Instagram without ads. The service costs £3.99 per month (around ₹400).

Why Did Meta Launch an Ad-Free Version?

Meta has faced criticism and regulatory pressure over its use of personal data for targeted advertising. To address this, the company introduced a subscription model:

Web users: £2.99 per month

Mobile users: £3.99 per month

Users with linked Facebook and Instagram accounts need only one subscription.

Meta explains that users can now choose between a free, ad-supported version or a paid, ad-free experience.

UK’s Approach vs. Europe

The European Union (EU) previously fined Meta €200 million for violating the Digital Markets Act, requiring a free version that uses minimal data like age, gender, and location.

In contrast, the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has welcomed Meta’s move, saying it allows users to access social media without being forced to see ads.

Data Privacy Concerns in the UK

This year, the ICO emphasized that users should have the right to prevent their data from being used for advertising.

Meta also reached a settlement in a case involving Tanya O’Carroll, a human rights activist who accused the company of using her data without consent.

Following this, Meta officially launched its ad-free subscription option.

Impact on UK-EU Digital Regulation

Experts say the UK’s approach highlights a widening gap between UK and EU rules on data privacy and digital regulation.

Gareth Oldale, a partner at UK law firm TLT, explains that the ICO’s support reflects the UK government’s focus on promoting the digital economy.

What This Means for Users

UK users now have the choice: scroll through Facebook and Instagram with ads for free or pay a few pounds per month for an ad-free experience.

This change not only adds convenience but also shows how different regions handle data privacy and regulation.
