Meta Faces Legal Threat Over Fake Ads on Facebook and Instagram

Meta, the American company that owns social media giants Facebook and Instagram, is facing potential legal trouble due to fake advertisements circulating on its platforms.

Polish billionaire Rafal Brzoska and his wife are planning to file a lawsuit against Meta after discovering ads that misused Brzoska’s image and spread false information about his wife.

Legal Action Looms

These misleading ads have been widely shared on social media, prompting Brzoska to consider legal action.

While he has not yet decided which court will hear the case, the possibility of filing it in Europe or the United States is under consideration.

Brzoska, founder of Poland’s parcel locker firm InPost, reported the issue to Meta in July, but the company has yet to resolve the problem.

Meta’s Response and Regulatory Pressure

A spokesperson for Meta stated that the company actively removes fake ads and collaborates with local authorities to combat scammers. However, despite these efforts, the problem persists.

Last week, the President of the Personal Data Protection Office directed Meta Platforms Ireland Limited to halt the use of real data and images of Brzoska and his wife in fake ads on Facebook and Instagram for three months.

Brzoska and his wife are demanding that Meta should not profit from content that infringes on their rights.

They also seek compensation equal to the earnings from such misleading ads, which they intend to donate to charity.
