Amid election buzz and a clash with the Election Commission, the West Bengal government presented its interim budget of ₹4.06 lakh crore for 2026-27 on Thursday.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced key increases in allowances for youth and women.
Finance Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya unveiled the details of the budget, highlighting schemes aimed at empowering women and supporting unemployed youth.
Lakshmi Bhandar Yojana: More Money for Women
One of the biggest announcements is the hike in the Lakshmi Bhandar scheme, which provides financial support to women every month.
Eligible women under this scheme now receive ₹1,500 to ₹1,700 per month.
Women from SC/ST categories will get ₹1,700, while general category women will get ₹1,500.
The scheme benefits women aged 25 to 60 who fall under the EWS category.
This increase of ₹500 per month is expected to give women extra financial security and support their daily needs.
Yuva Sathi Yojana: Support for Unemployed Youth
The government is also focusing on youth employment with the new Yuva Sathi Yojana.
Unemployed youth aged 21 to 40 will receive ₹1,500 per month.
The allowance will continue until they find a job or for a maximum of five years.
Additionally, ASHA and Anganwadi workers will see a ₹1,000 increase in their monthly allowances.
This move shows the government’s push to empower young people before the upcoming elections.
Upcoming Elections in West Bengal
The West Bengal Legislative Assembly session ends in May 2026, so elections are expected in March-April. All 294 assembly seats will go to polls.
Earlier, the Trinamool Congress and the Election Commission had disagreements over the Special Investment Region (SIR).
The matter has reached the Supreme Court, which has asked for responses from the Election Commission and West Bengal Election Commission by February 9.
