Malta Offers Nomad Residence Visa for Under ₹31,000 (Live and Work for Year)

If you’ve ever dreamed of living and working by the Mediterranean Sea, Malta—a beautiful country in Southern Europe—has a great offer for you.

It is providing a Nomad Residence Permit, also known as the Digital Nomad Visa, which allows people who work remotely (not for Maltese companies) to live legally in Malta for a year.

You cannot apply if you work for any Maltese company or have Maltese clients. Also, this visa does not lead to permanent residency or citizenship.

How to Apply

Step 1: Collect your documents, including:

  • Valid passport

  • Letter of intent explaining why you want to live in Malta

  • Proof of remote work (such as an employment contract, client agreement, or business registration)

  • Proof of income (like bank statements or salary slips)

  • Proof of accommodation in Malta (rental or purchase agreement)

  • Police clearance or a clean criminal record

  • Valid health insurance

Step 2: Submit your application through the official online portal.

Step 3: Pay the visa fee of €300 (about ₹30,534) per person.

Step 4: If your application is approved, you will receive an Approval in Principle. You’ll then need to submit final documents like accommodation and insurance proof.

Step 5: After arriving in Malta, you must give your biometric details. Once done, you’ll receive your residence card, which costs about €27.50 (₹2,799) per person.

Important Things to Know

The Nomad Residence Permit is valid for 1 year, but you can renew it up to 3 times, meaning you can stay in Malta for up to 4 years. For renewal, you must still meet the eligibility criteria.

If you plan to bring your spouse or dependents, they must also meet the eligibility rules, but you don’t need to show extra income for them.

You’ll receive your residence permit card upon arrival in Malta, but to enter the country, you must apply for a Schengen Visa or D-type visa first.
