The Maharashtra government has announced an important decision for vehicle owners in its 2026–27 budget. This step has been taken to reduce pollution in the state. The government has introduced two major measures in the budget.
First, the green tax on old and highly polluting vehicles has been increased. Second, people who scrap their old vehicles and buy new ones will receive special tax exemptions.
According to the government, this step is necessary because pollution levels are rising in many cities. A large number of old vehicles are still running on the roads and they are one of the major reasons behind increasing pollution.
While presenting the budget, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra said that this decision will not only help reduce pollution but will also support the automobile sector.
Green Tax on Old Vehicles Doubled
One of the biggest announcements in the budget is the doubling of the green tax on certain old vehicles. This increase mainly applies to private vehicles that follow BS-4 emission standards or older.
The government believes that these vehicles release more smoke and harmful pollutants compared to newer vehicles. Because of this, it is important to reduce their use on the roads.
Benefits for Scrapping Old Vehicles
Along with increasing the tax, the government has also provided relief to vehicle owners. People who scrap their old vehicles and purchase a new one will get an exemption in motor vehicle tax.
According to the government’s proposal:
If a BS-4 or newer vehicle is scrapped, the buyer may get up to about 16% tax exemption on the new vehicle.
If a BS-3 or older vehicle is scrapped, the tax relief on the new vehicle can go up to about 30%.
This benefit is mainly aimed at encouraging people to remove old vehicles from the roads and replace them with new ones.
Government’s Main Objective
The main goal of the government is to reduce pollution in the state. Older vehicles produce more smoke and also consume more fuel compared to modern vehicles. Because of this, air quality in many cities is getting worse.
The government wants people to switch to new technology vehicles that produce less pollution and also improve road safety. This move is also expected to boost sales in the automobile sector.
Impact on Vehicle Owners
This decision will affect vehicle owners in two different ways.
First, people who still own older vehicles may have to pay higher taxes, which can increase the cost of maintaining and using those vehicles.
Second, people who are planning to buy a new vehicle may benefit. If they scrap their old vehicle, they can get a good amount of tax discount on the new purchase, which will reduce the overall cost. ????
