The Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) has launched the Bima Sakhi Yojana to empower women in rural and semi-urban areas by training them to become insurance agents.
The scheme is open to women aged 18 to 70 years who have completed at least 10th grade education.
Under this initiative, participants receive specialized training for three years and a monthly stipend — ₹7,000 in the first year, ₹6,000 in the second, and ₹5,000 in the third.
After completing the training, they become official LIC agents, promoting financial awareness and security in their communities.
Empowering Women Through Self-Employment
The main aim of the Bima Sakhi scheme is to provide self-employment opportunities for women and increase insurance awareness in areas where such knowledge is limited.
Once trained, women can work independently as LIC agents, sell insurance policies, and earn a steady income.
The scheme’s unique feature is that it gives women financial independence while helping expand economic stability in rural regions.
Government Support and Growing Reach
The government provides a monthly stipend under this scheme — ₹7,000 in the first year, ₹6,000 in the second, and ₹5,000 in the third year, as long as the policy remains active.
This program not only empowers women but also helps expand insurance coverage across India’s villages and small towns.
So far, over 2 lakh women have joined as Bima Sakhis, and the government has allocated a ₹520 crore budget for the scheme.
Building a Secure Future
Through the Bima Sakhi Yojana, LIC is creating new job opportunities while helping families understand and benefit from insurance protection.
The initiative promotes social and financial security, making it a powerful step toward women’s empowerment and community development.
