Kerala Introduces New Time-Based Pricing for EV Charging

If you drive an electric vehicle (EV) and prefer charging it at night, this could soon become more expensive.

The Kerala State Electricity Regulatory Commission has introduced a major change for EV charging. Now, charging your EV at night will cost you 30% more. Let’s break it down.

Cheaper Charging During the Day!

Under the new rule, charging has been split into two time periods (Time of Day – ToD):

Solar Period (9 AM to 4 PM):

Charging your EV during this time will cost 30% less. For example, if charging used to cost Rs 100, it will now cost just Rs 70.

Non-Solar Period (4 PM to 9 AM):

Charging during this time will cost 30% more. So, the same charging that cost Rs 100 will now cost Rs 130.

Where Will This Apply?

These new tariffs will only affect public EV charging stations. If you charge your EV at home, this rule won’t apply to you.

Currently, the rule is in effect in Kerala, but it could be introduced in other states later.

A Challenge for Charging Companies

Charging stations that rely on solar power may face issues. If they can’t fully use the solar energy during the day, they won’t get full credit for the energy used in the evening, which could lead to losses.

What Does This Mean for EV Owners?

EV owners will now need to consider not just when and how far to drive but also when to charge their vehicle.

Smart planning can help save money. Charging during the day is cheaper, but many people prefer to charge at night for convenience. Now, they may need to change this habit.

Is This a Benefit or a Hassle?

This change benefits those who can charge during the day. However, for people who charge only at night due to their work schedule or travel, it will now be more expensive.

EV charging is no longer just about technology, but also about timing. This move shows the government’s aim to promote green energy and ease the strain on the power grid.
