ITR Filing Last Date 2025: There’s good news for taxpayers. The deadline to file Income Tax Returns (ITR) for the financial year 2024-25 (assessment year 2025-26) has been extended from July 31 to September 15, 2025.
This extension was made because the Excel utilities for ITR forms (ITR-1, 2, 3, and 4) were released late.
Additionally, delays were caused by system upgrades and the introduction of new reporting rules.
With this change, taxpayers now have about 50 extra days to file and verify their ITRs without rushing. But will this deadline be extended again?
Which Form Utilities Are Still Unavailable?
The Excel utilities for ITR-5, 6, and 7 have not been released yet. Also, the JSON utility for online filing of ITR-3 is still unavailable. Right now, ITR-3 is only accessible in Excel format.
Can the Deadline Be Extended Again?
Even though the new deadline is September 15, many taxpayers are wondering if it might be extended further.
According to tax expert Suresh Surana, there hasn’t been any official word from the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) yet.
However, since some form utilities are still missing, filing time could be affected. Surana added that in past years, the CBDT has extended the deadline when there were technical issues or delays. The same could happen this time, but nothing can be confirmed as of now.
Who Will Benefit From This Extension?
The extension mainly benefits salaried individuals and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) whose accounts don’t need to be audited. They now have until September 15, 2025, to file their ITR without paying a late fee.
What Should You Do Now?
If you haven’t filed your ITR yet, now is a good time to do so. Don’t wait until the last day. Filing early can help avoid technical issues or possible penalties.
