Popular social media platform Instagram faced a major outage today, leaving thousands of users unable to send or receive direct messages.
The sudden problem confused many people at first. Some users thought there was an issue with their internet connection or the app itself.
However, it soon became clear that the problem was widespread.
According to outage-tracking website Downdetector, reports of issues began rising early in the morning.
The number of complaints sharply increased around 9:15 AM, when more than 12,000 reports were recorded.
Normally, the platform sees only around 23 reports, showing how unusual the situation was.
Direct Messages Feature Stopped Working
The biggest problem during the outage involved Instagram’s Direct Messages (DMs) feature.
Many users said their messages were not being delivered. Others reported that their chat sections were not loading at all.
Interestingly, some parts of the app continued to work. Users could still open Instagram and scroll through posts or watch stories, but sending messages or replying to conversations was not possible.
As the issue continued, more users reported the problem on Downdetector.
At one point, over 2,000 users had logged complaints.
Most reports came from the United States, though some users in other countries also experienced similar issues.
Users Rush to Other Platforms for Answers
When Instagram’s messaging feature stopped working, many users quickly turned to other social media platforms to check if the issue was widespread.
On X, thousands of people began posting questions asking whether Instagram was down.
Soon, the platform was filled with memes and jokes about the situation. Some users humorously complained about not being able to reply to friends or continue conversations.
The word “cooked” even started trending in posts as people joked about the messaging problem.
Meta Has Not Yet Explained the Outage
Instagram’s parent company, Meta Platforms, has not yet shared the exact reason behind the outage.
The company has also not confirmed whether the issue was caused by server problems, a technical glitch, or a software update.
Outages like this are usually resolved within a few hours.
However, they often remind people how heavily they rely on platforms like Instagram for daily communication.
For now, users are waiting for the messaging service to return to normal as the company works to fix the issue.
