Instagram has launched a new app called Instants, aiming to compete directly with apps like Snapchat. After testing the feature in selected markets, the company is now rolling it out globally.

The biggest feature of Instants is temporary photo sharing. Just like Snapchat, photos shared on the app will disappear after they are viewed and will no longer be available after 24 hours.

Users can access Instants in two ways — through Instagram itself or by downloading the standalone Instants app separately.

How the Instants App Works

The Instants app opens directly to the camera, making photo sharing quick and simple. Users can take a photo instantly and send it to close friends or followers.

Unlike regular Instagram posts, Instants focuses on real and unedited moments. Users will not be able to edit photos or upload images from their phone gallery. After clicking a photo, the only option available will be adding a caption.

This approach is designed to offer a more natural experience compared to the highly edited content usually seen on Instagram.

Screenshots and Screen Recording Not Allowed

Photos shared through Instants will appear in the receiver’s inbox. Users can react with emojis, reply to the photo, or send their own Instant back.

Instagram says screenshots will be blocked on the app. Screen recording support will also not be available, adding more privacy to shared photos.

The app also includes an “Undo” feature. This allows users to cancel a sent photo before the other person opens it.

Instagram’s New Move Against Snapchat

With Instants, Instagram is entering the growing trend of temporary-content apps. Apps like BeReal and Locket Widget have already gained popularity for sharing real-time and short-lived content.

However, Instagram has added a few unique features of its own. Shared Instants can be stored in a private archive for up to one year and later used for story recaps.

The company has also included teen safety features such as Family Center controls and shared screen-time limits to improve user safety on the platform.
