Meta-owned Instagram has introduced several new features to its Direct Messages (DMs).
Announced on Monday, these updates include the ability for users to assign nicknames to their friends in DMs.
Additionally, Instagram now offers a location-sharing feature, similar to Snapchat, allowing users to share their live location for easier access.
Customizing Nicknames in DMs
Instagram shared details about these updates through a blog post, explaining how they work. Users can now personalize their DM experience by assigning nicknames to friends.
To set or edit a nickname, simply tap on a friend’s profile in the chat and select the nickname option.
Users can also control who is allowed to edit nicknames. There are three options to choose from:
1) Everyone in the chat
2) People you follow
3) Only you
Nicknames will only appear in the DM section and will not affect usernames elsewhere on the app. These features are available on both Android and iOS devices.
Easier Location Sharing
Instagram has made location sharing simpler. Like Snapchat’s Snap Map, users can share their live location with others for one hour.
After that, the location will no longer be visible. Additionally, users can pin specific locations on the map.
This feature is available for both one-on-one and group chats, but it is currently limited to select countries.
New Stickers for More Fun
Instagram has also introduced 17 new sticker packs, giving users access to over 300 new stickers in DMs. Users can mark stickers as favorites and reuse ones sent by friends.
These updates aim to enhance the Instagram DM experience with more personalization, improved sharing options, and creative features for users.
