IndiGo Removes Gender Question from Ticket Booking

IndiGo, India’s largest airline, has announced a significant change in its ticket booking process.

The airline will no longer ask passengers to specify their gender when booking a ticket. This move is part of IndiGo’s broader efforts to promote inclusivity and support diverse identities.

New Option for Inclusivity

IndiGo will now offer passengers the option to select “Mx” instead of traditional gender categories like male or female.

This change aims to provide a more inclusive option for transgender individuals and others who prefer not to disclose their gender identity. Previously, ticket booking forms only included male and female options.

Commitment to Disability Inclusion

In addition to this change, IndiGo has set a goal to double the number of employees with disabilities within the company.

As India’s largest airline with a 62% share of the domestic market, IndiGo is focused on improving inclusivity across all aspects of its operations.

Adoption by Other Airlines

Air India Express and Vistara have already implemented the “Mx” option for passengers. IndiGo’s Group Chief HR Officer, Sukhjeet S Pasricha, highlighted that the airline is also running special programs to recruit individuals from the LGBTQ+ community.

These initiatives are part of IndiGo’s ongoing efforts to support and integrate diverse groups within its workforce.

Market Dominance

According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, approximately 13 million people traveled by air in July, with IndiGo maintaining its dominance in the domestic market with a 62% share. In contrast, Air India’s market share fell to 14.3%.
