India’s UPI Expands to Trinidad and Tobago

India’s digital payment system is gaining popularity worldwide. Now, Trinidad and Tobago has joined the list of countries using UPI (Unified Payment Interface).

It has become the first Caribbean nation to adopt UPI. This means people in Trinidad and Tobago can now use UPI to make payments for any transaction.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated the country for adopting digital transactions through the BHIM App.

PM Modi’s Visit to Trinidad and Tobago

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Trinidad and Tobago on July 3–4, following an invitation from the country’s Prime Minister, Kamala Prasad-Bissessar.

According to a report by news agency ANI, both countries showed strong interest in enhancing digital cooperation.

They also agreed to work together on implementing India Stack solutions such as DigiLocker, e-Sign, and the Government e-Marketplace (GeM).

Other Countries That Have Adopted UPI

France

In 2024, France became the first European country to adopt UPI. NPCI’s international arm collaborated with France’s digital payment platform Lyra to launch UPI in the country. This allows secure e-commerce and in-person payments.

United Arab Emirates

In 2021, NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) partnered with Network International to launch QR code-based UPI payments in the UAE.

This allows UPI payments in places like Dubai Mall, Mall of the Emirates, and other shops and restaurants.

Nepal

In 2024, NIPL and PhonePe Payment Services Limited, Nepal’s largest payment network, launched UPI for cross-border transactions between India and Nepal.

Bhutan

In 2021, Bhutan’s Royal Monetary Authority partnered with NIPL to accept BHIM UPI QR-based online payments.

Bhutan was the first country to adopt UPI standards for QR codes and the first in India’s neighborhood to allow mobile-based payments via the BHIM app.

Mauritius

In 2024, Prime Minister Modi and Mauritius PM Pravind Jagannath jointly launched UPI services in Mauritius. RuPay cards are also being used there.

UPI services have also started in Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe said this move will improve connectivity and strengthen ties between the two countries.

Singapore

In 2023, NIPL partnered with Singapore-based payment firm Hitpay to allow UPI payments across Singapore.
