After Diwali, Indian Railways has announced a massive travel plan to handle the festive rush for Chhath Puja 2025.
From October 23 to 28, around 1,500 special trains will run across the country — averaging 300 daily departures — to help devotees reach their hometowns for the celebrations.
Chhath Puja, falling between October 25 and 28, witnesses one of the biggest travel surges in India, especially for people heading to Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand.
Record Number of Festival Trains This Season
Between October 1 and November 30, 2025, Indian Railways plans to operate over 12,000 festival special trains — a sharp increase from 7,724 services last year.
As per the Railway Ministry’s update, 11,865 trips covering 916 trains have already been scheduled.
This includes 9,338 reserved and 2,203 unreserved services, ensuring options for both confirmed travelers and last-minute passengers.
The expansion highlights the Railways’ continued efforts to manage heavy passenger traffic during India’s peak festive season.
Key Routes for Chhath Puja Travelers
To handle the massive homeward rush, special trains are being run on several high-demand routes, including:
Mumbai – Gorakhpur
New Delhi – Patna / Darbhanga
Sabarmati – Muzaffarpur
Barauni – Ernakulam
Udhna – Jaynagar / Bhagalpur
Kolkata – Gorakhpur / Mau / Jodhpur
Additionally, new services will operate on routes like Panvel–Chiplun, Rajkot–Barauni, and Indore–Mumbai Central, providing extra options for travelers heading home.
Minister Reviews Passenger Safety and Comfort
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently inspected arrangements at New Delhi and Anand Vihar stations.
He reviewed crowd management systems, waiting areas, and passenger facilities to ensure smooth travel for everyone.
With these added trains and safety measures, Indian Railways aims to make festive travel during Chhath Puja comfortable, safe, and hassle-free for millions of passengers.
