Indian Railways has taken several important decisions for passengers. Recently, ticket cancellation and refund rules were made stricter and more transparent. Now, a historic step has been taken to honor the brave soldiers of the country.
Railways has announced a special gift of lifetime free train travel for gallantry award-winning personnel from the Army, Navy,
and Air Force, along with their families. This decision is a way to show respect and gratitude for their courage and service to the nation.
Lifetime Free Travel for Gallantry Award Winners
According to new orders from the Government of India and the Ministry of Defence, soldiers who have received gallantry awards will now get free train travel for life.
This includes winners of prestigious awards such as:
Param Vir Chakra
Mahavir Chakra
Vir Chakra
Ashok Chakra
Kirti Chakra
Shaurya Chakra
This benefit is not limited to the soldiers alone. Their wives and widows will also get free travel for life. They can travel without any cost in premium classes like:
First Class
Second AC
AC Chair Car
Free Travel for Attendants as Well
The government has made the scheme even more helpful by extending benefits to attendants. Any person traveling with the award winners or their widows will also get lifetime free train travel.
This is especially useful for elderly or injured soldiers who need assistance while traveling. The Defence Ministry has said that this facility is a small way to recognize their sacrifice and ensure they do not face financial difficulties during travel.
Discounts for Other Passengers
Apart from gallantry award winners, Indian Railways continues to offer concessions to other groups in need.
Disabled, mentally challenged, and blind passengers get up to 75% discount in General, Sleeper, and 3AC classes.
Patients suffering from serious diseases like cancer, thalassemia, heart disease, kidney problems, and AIDS receive major discounts for travel related to medical treatment.
Students also get 50% to 75% discount on travel between their homes and educational institutions.
