India Suspends Postal Services to US Temporarily: Check Why

The Indian Postal Department has announced that starting August 25, 2025, it will temporarily stop accepting all types of postal items going to the United States.

This decision comes in response to new import tariffs introduced by the US government under Executive Order No. 14324, issued on July 30, 2025.

US Ends Duty-Free Limit

Until now, goods worth up to $800 sent to the US were exempt from customs duty. But under the new US order, this exemption will end on August 29, 2025.

After that, all goods, regardless of their value, sent by post to the US will be charged customs duties. The rates will be based on country-specific tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).

Impact on Indian Senders and US Recipients

This change will affect many individuals and businesses in India who send parcels to the US, including small exporters, students, families, and e-commerce sellers.

  • Higher costs: US recipients may have to pay more for goods coming from India because of the new customs duties.

  • Service disruption: With postal bookings stopped, Indian exporters will need to use private courier companies instead.

  • Few exemptions: Only gift parcels worth $100 or less will be free from duties under the new rules.

What’s Next?

The Indian Postal Department has said that this suspension is temporary and may be lifted depending on future US decisions.

If the US changes its tariff policy, India could restart its postal services with updated procedures to comply with the new rules.

For now, people sending goods from India to the US should expect increased costs, more documentation, and possible delivery delays.

Businesses may also need to adjust their pricing strategies to stay competitive in the US market.
