India Post launches DIGIPIN for Precise Digital Addresses

India Post has introduced DIGIPIN, a new digital addressing system that assigns a unique 10-character alphanumeric code to every property.

Unlike traditional PIN codes, which cover large areas, DIGIPIN can pinpoint a location within a 4-metre square, making it extremely precise.

To get a DIGIPIN, users can visit the official website, locate their property, and generate the unique code.

How DIGIPIN Benefits Users

DIGIPIN aims to streamline deliveries, improve emergency services, and increase efficiency across India, especially in remote or unstructured areas.

Key advantages include:

Precision: Identifies exact locations within a 4m x 4m grid

Efficiency: Helps faster deliveries for e-commerce platforms like Amazon and Flipkart, and supports ambulance and fire rescue services

Inclusivity: Covers areas with no formal addresses, such as rural regions or informal settlements

Privacy: Does not store personal data

This system is particularly useful for online shoppers, logistics companies, and emergency responders, reducing delivery errors and improving response times.

How DIGIPIN Works

Developed in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and NRSC, ISRO, DIGIPIN divides India into 4m x 4m grids, with each grid assigned a unique code based on its latitude and longitude.

Unlike traditional postal addresses that rely on street names and house numbers, DIGIPIN uses geospatial coordinates for accuracy.

The system can also function offline, and the programming code is publicly available for developers to fetch and decode DIGIPINs.

A Digital Layer for Precise Addressing

DIGIPIN does not replace your existing postal address.

Instead, it adds a digital layer for more accurate, standardized addressing.

Over time, this may reduce the need for long descriptive addresses, especially in rural, remote, or informal areas.

Each DIGIPIN encodes a location’s coordinates into a 10-character alphanumeric code, providing far greater precision than a standard PIN code.

This system is designed to make address management simple and consistent across diverse terrains, including forests, oceans, and underdeveloped regions.
