India Post has introduced new rules that make it easier for customers to get a refund if they cancel certain postal bookings.

The Department of Posts issued an official notification on July 16, allowing refunds for bookings made online as well as at post office counters.

However, refunds will only be available if specific conditions are met.

Online Bookings Can Be Cancelled Before Acceptance

If you book a postal service through the India Post website or mobile app, you can cancel the booking and claim a refund before the parcel or article is accepted by the post office.

Once the item has been accepted for processing, the refund option will no longer be available under this rule.

Rules for Counter Bookings

For bookings made at a post office counter, the sender can request cancellation at the same post office.

A booking may also be cancelled by the post office on the same day if there is an error in the information entered during booking.

India Post said that refunds for cancelled postal items will be processed according to the administrative instructions issued by the Department of Posts from time to time.

What Charges Will Be Refunded?

Under the new rules, customers may receive a refund of:

Postage charges

Special service charges

Air surcharge (where applicable)

These refunds will apply in cases such as cancellation or suspension of postal services, as per the department’s guidelines.

New Rules for International Postal Articles

India Post has also introduced new facilities for international postal bookings.

Senders of accountable outbound international postal articles can now request to recall their parcel from the booking office for any reason, subject to the department’s rules.

Recipients of accountable international postal articles can also request redirection of their item from the delivery office by paying the required postage charges.

However, if the new address falls under the same post office delivery area, no extra charge will be applied.

The rules also allow international consignments to be recalled or redirected from foreign destinations, depending on the policies of the respective country’s postal administration.
