These advanced passports come with a built-in microchip that securely stores the passport holder’s personal and biometric information.

This marks a major step toward improving passport security and verification speed for Indians abroad.

Applications for the new e-passports can be made online through the official portal.

The passports are part of India’s Global Passport Seva Programme (GPSP 2.0), which uses advanced technology to ensure data safety.

What Happens to Old Passports?

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), existing passports will remain valid until their expiry date. Holders can continue to use them for travel without any problem.

There is no immediate need to replace old passports. The rollout of new e-passports will happen gradually, in a phased manner.

Features and Benefits of the New E-Passport

An e-passport looks similar to a traditional passport but includes a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip and antenna.

This chip stores the passport holder’s details and biometric data. A gold chip symbol on the passport cover indicates that it is an electronic passport.

The new numbering format also changes — it will now include two letters followed by six digits, replacing the old pattern of one letter and seven digits.

Key Advantages

Faster and more secure verification at airports worldwide.

Enhanced data protection for travelers.

Online application and uploads, allowing users to submit their photo, signature,

and documents digitally via the Passport Seva Programme (PSP) portal, reducing long queues and waiting times at BLS International centers.
