Income Tax Return Filing Date Extended: Now File ITR Till 15 September

Great relief for taxpayers: The government has extended the last date to file Income Tax Returns (ITR) this year. Earlier, the deadline was 31 July.

But now, you can file your ITR till 15 September 2025. This is the first time the government has extended the ITR filing deadline on its own, without any public demand.

Why has the government extended the ITR deadline?

This year, there have been major changes in the ITR forms. Because of this, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has decided to give taxpayers more time to file their returns.

The goal is to make sure people don’t face any trouble while filing. That’s why the filing date has been shifted from 31 July to 15 September.

You Can File ITR Till 15 September

The Income Tax Department (CBDT) has extended the last date for filing ITR for the financial year 2024–25 (assessment year 2025–26).

Now, taxpayers can file their returns till 15 September 2025 instead of 31 July 2025. CBDT announced this in a press release on 27 May 2025.

According to the department, major changes have been made to the ITR forms this time. These changes affect both the content and layout of the forms.

The aim is to make the return-filing process easier, more transparent, and to ensure that the information given is accurate.

CBDT also said that it will take time to create e-filing utilities based on the new forms, add them to the system, and test them properly.

Also, TDS data, which is supposed to be updated by 31 May, usually appears on the portal only by early June.

Without extending the deadline, taxpayers would have very little time to file their returns.

New ITR Filing Deadline

Old last date: 31 July 2025

New last date: 15 September 2025

Reason: Changes in the ITR forms, need for system upgrades, and time required to upload TDS details. CBDT said an official notification about the extension will be issued soon.

What Are the Benefits?

This extension gives taxpayers more time to understand the new forms and fill them out correctly.

It also allows the department to improve and update its system, so that the return filing process goes smoothly without any technical issues.
