The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) announced a major update on Thursday.
The deadline for filing income tax audit reports for the financial year 2024-25 (assessment year 2025-26) has been extended to October 31, 2025, from the earlier date of September 30, 2025.
This extension applies to taxpayers covered under Section 139 of the Income Tax Act, 1961.
All audit reports must now be submitted online via the ITR portal by the new deadline.
Who Needs to File an Income Tax Audit Report?
According to Abhishek Soni, co-founder of Tax2Win, the requirements under Section 44AB for AY 2025-26 are as follows:
Businesses with turnover above ₹1 crore. (This limit increases to ₹10 crore if cash transactions are less than 5%)
Professionals with gross receipts exceeding ₹50 lakh
Taxpayers under presumptive taxation (44AD/44ADA/44AE), if declared profits are lower than the prescribed rate and income exceeds the basic exemption limit
Reason for Extension
The CBDT extended the deadline after receiving complaints from professional bodies, including chartered accountants.
Many taxpayers faced difficulties filing reports on time due to floods and other natural disasters.
The issue was even raised in the High Court.
