Heavy Rain Alert: It’s the month of May, and most of North India is facing extreme heat. Cities like Delhi and other parts of the country are experiencing intense temperatures.
Relief from this scorching heat will only come once the monsoon reaches the region and brings rainfall.
A major update from the Meteorological Department has given hope—let’s find out when the monsoon is expected to arrive.
Monsoon Has Reached These Areas
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) announced on Tuesday that the southwest monsoon has reached parts of the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea on May 13.
According to the IMD, the monsoon has now entered parts of the South Bay of Bengal, South Andaman Sea, Nicobar Islands, and North Andaman Sea.
The conditions are now favorable for the monsoon to advance into more regions, including parts of the South Arabian Sea, the Maldives, the Comorin region, and additional areas of the Bay of Bengal.
Rain Expected for the Next 3–4 Days
The monsoon is likely to cover the entire Andaman and Nicobar Islands, along with parts of the central Bay of Bengal, over the next three to four days.
Its arrival follows two days of continuous rain in the region. The Nicobar Islands have already received heavy rainfall in the past two days.
At around 1.5 km above sea level, strong western winds blowing at speeds over 20 knots were recorded—indicating the arrival of the monsoon.
The IMD has also said that this year’s monsoon is expected to be slightly above normal, at 105% of the average 880 mm rainfall.
Rain Alert for These Areas
As for today’s weather, the Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rain alert for the northeastern states.
Torrential rain is expected in Assam and Meghalaya, and an orange alert has been issued in these areas. However, the rest of North India will continue to experience severe heat for now.
