The GST Council has made a major decision to change the GST rates.
Earlier, there were four GST slabs: 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%. Now, this has been reduced to just two slabs: 5% and 18%.
This change will be effective from September 22, 2025.
This move aims to reduce the cost of building materials like cement, steel (sariya), bricks, and tiles, making construction more affordable.
How the New GST Rates Affect Building Materials
Cement and Steel (Sariya): Previously taxed at 28%, now reduced to 18%.
This means a significant price drop for buyers.
Bricks and Tiles: These were earlier taxed at 12%, now brought down to 5%, which will further reduce building costs.
For example, if cement costs ₹400 per bag, buyers will save ₹40 per bag due to the lower GST.
Similarly, for steel and bricks, the cost savings will be noticeable, especially when buying in bulk for construction.
Overall, this GST rate cut will help people save a lot of money while building their homes, making housing more affordable for many.
