Using two smartphones or multiple SIM cards has become quite common these days.

Many people prefer having separate numbers for personal and professional use, especially with the availability of affordable prepaid plans in India.

However, not everyone knows that there’s a legal limit to how many SIM cards one person can have—and exceeding that limit can lead to heavy fines or even jail time.

The Legal Limit: Maximum 9 SIM Cards Per Person

According to telecom regulations, a single person in India can have a maximum of nine SIM cards registered in their name.

For people living in Jammu & Kashmir, Assam, and other northeastern states, the limit is six SIM cards.

This rule is monitored under the Telecommunications Act, 2023, and is strictly enforced to prevent misuse of SIM cards for illegal activities.

To help users keep track of their mobile connections, the IT Ministry has launched a portal called ‘Sanchar Saathi’.

What Happens If You Exceed the Limit?

If someone holds more SIM cards than the permitted number, they can face strict action.

First violation: Fine of up to Rs 50,000

Second violation: Fine increased to Rs 2 lakh

These penalties show how seriously the government takes misuse of mobile connections.

Using a Fake ID for a SIM Card? Here’s the Punishment

Using someone else’s identity to get a SIM card is a criminal offense. Anyone found guilty can face:

Up to three years in jail,

A fine of up to Rs 50 lakh, or

Both penalties together.

If you suspect someone has taken a SIM card using your identity, visit tafcop.sancharsaathi.gov.in

Enter your number and OTP to see all active mobile numbers linked to your ID.

You can report any number that isn’t yours by clicking “Not My Number” or deactivate unused numbers by selecting “Not Required.”

Stay Safe, Stay Aware

While having multiple SIM cards is convenient, it’s important to stay within the legal limit.

Always use your own identity when applying for a SIM card, and keep track of all numbers registered under your name.

It’s a small step that can save you from major legal trouble later.
