The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert on Monday, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in many parts of the country.
According to the IMD, Northeast India is already experiencing heavy rain and possible landslides. These conditions are expected to worsen over the next three days.
States like Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura may receive very heavy rain within the next 24 hours.
An orange alert has been issued for all of them. In South India, Kerala and Mahe are also seeing heavy rainfall following the arrival of the monsoon, providing relief from the summer heat.
Thunderstorms and Strong Winds Expected in North and Central India
In Delhi and nearby areas, thunderstorms along with light to heavy rain are expected today. The IMD forecasts strong winds of up to 60 km/h in Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, and western Uttar Pradesh.
Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Jharkhand may also face lightning, rain, and strong winds up to 50 km/h.
Similar weather conditions are expected in Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. Heavy rain is likely in parts of eastern Rajasthan, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim.
Other areas such as Gujarat, Telangana, Tamil Nadu (including Puducherry and Karaikal), and parts of Andhra Pradesh
and Karnataka may experience thunderstorms with lightning and winds reaching 30–40 km/h. Dust storms are also possible in western Rajasthan, which is typical before the full onset of the monsoon.
IMD Safety Advice During Bad Weather
The IMD has urged people to take safety measures during severe weather. Here are their key recommendations:
Stay indoors during heavy rain and strong winds. Keep doors and windows closed.
Avoid travel unless necessary when the weather is bad.
If you’re outside, stay away from trees or open spaces and find shelter.
Unplug electrical appliances to prevent short circuits.
Keep checking weather updates and be ready to move to a safer place if needed.
