Hallmarking Rules to Apply on Silver Jewellery from September 1 – These Are the Major Changes

Silver Jewellery Hallmarking: The government is going to take an important step to ensure the purity of silver jewellery.

Starting from September 1, 2025, a new rule about hallmarking silver jewellery could be introduced.

For now, this rule will be voluntary. This means buyers can choose whether to buy silver jewellery with or without a hallmark.

It will not be compulsory. This process is similar to the one that was earlier introduced for gold jewellery.

What is the new change?

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has defined six levels of purity for silver: 900, 800, 835, 925, 970, and 990. Now, each silver jewellery item will get a 6-digit Hallmark Unique ID (HUID).

This HUID will help identify how pure the jewellery is and whether it is genuine. This system will replace the old way of hallmarking silver.

What is hallmarking?

Hallmarking is a way to guarantee the purity of a metal. It is a government-approved process where metals like gold or silver are tested and certified.

BIS’s hallmarking scheme ensures that buyers get exactly what they are paying for in terms of quality.

How will customers benefit?

This new rule will help customers avoid being cheated. Jewellery without a hallmark can often be mixed with other metals.

But with hallmarked silver, this risk is lower. The best part is that customers can now use the BIS Care App to verify the HUID on their jewellery and check if it is real or fake.

Hallmarking was earlier made compulsory for gold

In 2021, the government made hallmarking mandatory for gold jewellery. Now, similar rules are being introduced for silver.

This move will make the jewellery market more transparent and help build trust among customers.

What will change from September 1?

From September 1, people will be able to choose between hallmarked and non-hallmarked silver jewellery.

But it is expected that more customers will now prefer hallmarked items. This will not only protect buyers but also boost trust in the jewellery business.
