Taxpayers preparing to challenge GST-related orders have received major relief from the central government.

The deadline for filing appeals before the Goods and Services Tax Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT) has now been extended to July 31, 2026.

Earlier, the last date for filing appeals was June 30, 2026. The government took this decision after many taxpayers faced technical issues due to heavy traffic on the GSTAT portal.

The extension is expected to benefit thousands of businesses, companies, and individual taxpayers who were unable to complete the appeal process on time because of portal-related problems.

Heavy Traffic on Portal Led to Deadline Extension

According to the Finance Ministry, the number of appeals filed on the GSTAT portal increased sharply over the past few days, putting significant pressure on the system.

This caused technical glitches and made it difficult for many taxpayers to submit their applications.

The GST Appellate Tribunal is the first judicial authority where taxpayers can challenge GST orders after completing the initial appeal process.

Businesses and taxpayers who believe a GST department order is incorrect can approach the tribunal for relief.

Around 30,000 Appeals Filed in Just 15 Days

The government said that although the appeal process had been notified much earlier, a large number of taxpayers waited until the final days to file their applications.

As a result, nearly 30,000 appeals were submitted in the last 15 days alone.

On some days, more than 5,500 appeals were filed, creating a massive load on the portal and resulting in technical difficulties.

Several industry bodies, chartered accountants, and tax experts had requested the government to extend the deadline, citing ongoing technical problems faced by taxpayers. After reviewing these concerns, the government decided to provide an additional month.

Who Will Benefit From the Extension?

The extended deadline applies to appeals filed under Sections 112(1) and 112(3) of the GST law. Taxpayers who need to file appeals before the GST Appellate Tribunal can now submit their applications until July 31, 2026.

Government’s Important Advice to Taxpayers

The government has also issued an important advisory to taxpayers. Officials have urged people not to wait until the last day to file their appeals.

They warned that if a large number of applications are submitted at the last moment again, the portal may face similar technical problems.

Tax experts have welcomed the decision, saying that preparing documents, obtaining legal advice, and completing the online filing process often requires considerable time.

The additional one-month extension will allow taxpayers to complete the process carefully and without unnecessary pressure.

The government’s decision has brought significant relief to thousands of taxpayers preparing to file appeals before the GSTAT.

However, experts believe that taxpayers should make proper use of this extra time and complete their filings well before July 31 to avoid any last-minute technical issues.
