Govt updates Telecom Rules Effective from January 1

The government regularly updates telecom rules to keep up with modern needs.

Recently, new rules were added to the Telecom Act under the Right of Way (RoW) framework, which all states have been directed to adopt.

These rules aim to streamline telecom operations, and some states have even received exemptions from specific charges.

New Rules Effective from January 1

According to a report by Economic Times (ET), the new RoW rules will come into effect on January 1.

These changes will accelerate the installation of optical fiber and telecom towers, benefiting telecom operators and infrastructure providers.

DoT Secretary Neeraj Mittal has instructed state secretaries to ensure compliance with these rules by November 30.

Once this is done, the updated RoW portal will begin implementing the new rules in the new year.

Mittal also mentioned that the current RoW rules should end by January 2025, making way for the updated system.

The new rules will grant states more authority to provide clarifications to the central authorities on telecom matters.

What Are the RoW Rules?

The Right of Way (RoW) rules set guidelines for installing telecom infrastructure like towers and optical fibers on both public and private property.

These rules aim to modernize the telecom sector while ensuring public safety and transparency.

With the new changes coming into force from January 1, significant developments in telecom infrastructure are expected.

Focus on 5G Expansion

A key goal of the updated RoW rules is to enhance 5G network deployment across the country. By simplifying processes

and supporting faster installation of 5G towers, these rules are set to play an important role in delivering high-speed connectivity nationwide.
