Govt updates Family Pension Rules for Employees’ Parents

The Central Government has changed the pension rules for government employees.

As per the new regulations, both parents must submit a life certificate every year if they wish to continue receiving the 75% increased family pension.

This clarification was issued by the Department of Pension & Pensioners’ Welfare to ensure that pensions are given correctly and at the proper rate.

Earlier, parents receiving a family pension at the increased rate were not required to provide a life certificate, and the government did not verify whether both parents were alive.

New Rule for Family Pension of Deceased Government Employees

In many cases, even after one parent’s death, the pension continued at 75%, even though the rule states that it should reduce to 60% if only one parent is alive.

This led to extra payments by the government.

To fix this issue, the government has now made it mandatory for both parents to submit separate life certificates each year.

This will help determine who is alive and ensure that the pension is adjusted properly.

Under Rule 12, Subrule 5 of the CCS EOP Rules 2023, if a deceased government employee has no spouse or child, the parents are eligible for a family pension.

If both parents are alive, they receive 75% of the pension.

If only one parent is alive, the amount reduces to 60%.

The pension will not be affected by any other income the parents have.

However, a life certificate must be submitted every November. If one parent passes away, only one certificate will be required the next year,

and the pension will automatically change to 60%. Any overpayment will be recovered.

Submit Life Certificate by November 30

All pensioners must submit their life certificate by November 30 every year. If it is not submitted on time, the pension will be stopped from December.

Once the certificate is submitted, the pension will resume, and any missed amount will be credited later.

Submitting a life certificate is now very simple:

You can use the Jeevan Pramaan app, link it with your Aadhaar, and scan your face.

You can also visit a bank or post office and give your fingerprint.

For senior citizens, home service is also available.

If anyone in your family is receiving a family pension, make sure both parents’ life certificates are ready.

To continue getting 75% of the pension, these steps must be completed on time.

This new rule ensures that government funds go to the right people, prevents fraud, and helps genuine beneficiaries receive their rightful pension.
