During Diwali, many government departments and public sector units (PSUs) usually give gifts. However, this year, the tradition will not continue.
The central government has clearly stated that Diwali gifts will not be distributed using government funds.
In a major decision, ministries, departments, and PSUs have been prohibited from giving gifts or spending money on them during festivals.
The Finance Ministry issued this order to maintain financial discipline in government offices and reduce unnecessary expenses.
Rules on Government Spending for Gifts
The Department of Expenditure under the Finance Ministry issued an official memorandum.
It clearly mentions that no ministry, department, or government entity can spend money on gifts or related items during festivals. This rule is effective immediately.
The government said similar instructions have been issued in the past.
This step is part of a series of measures to ensure public funds are used wisely and only for essential purposes.
Implementation and Oversight
The order was approved by the Expenditure Secretary and issued by Joint Secretary PK Singh.
It has been sent to the secretaries and financial advisors of all ministries and departments.
Public sector undertakings, banks, and financial institutions are also required to strictly follow these rules.
The government stated that these measures aim to prevent wasteful spending and ensure that public money is used properly.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has repeatedly emphasized that government resources should be used responsibly.
Public and Political Response
The decision has also received political reactions. Shiv Sena MP Milind Deora welcomed the move, writing on X (formerly Twitter):
“I welcome the Finance Ministry’s directive that central government departments and PSUs refrain from spending lavishly on gifts during festivals.
For too long, politicians and bureaucrats have been the biggest beneficiaries of this spending. State governments should also follow suit.”
