Govt Issues Warning on Parcel Scam Messages

In the digital age, the government is tightening rules to stop cybercrime. However, fraudsters are also using new tricks to cheat people.

Recently, many people have received fake messages pretending to be from the post office. These messages try to fool people by saying their address details need to be updated.

How the Post Office Parcel Scam Works

Scammers claim to be from India Post and send a message saying your parcel has reached the warehouse but could not be delivered because your address is incomplete.

The message includes a link and asks you to update your address within 48 hours. It also warns that if you do not update the details, the parcel will be returned.

This is where the scam actually starts. When someone clicks on the link, fraudsters can steal personal information. In some cases, they can even take money directly from the victim’s bank account.

Government Warning and Safety Measures

The government’s fact-checking agency, PIB Fact Check, has clearly stated that the post office does not send messages with such links.

This means these parcel delivery messages are completely fake and are sent only to cheat people. So, always think carefully before clicking on any unknown link.

To control such fraud, the telecom regulator Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has introduced new rules. Messages from genuine and verified senders now carry unique identification marks.

Government department messages have a specific identification mark, and bank or service-related messages follow a fixed format. If a message does not have this identification mark, it is safer to consider it suspicious.

How to Stay Safe

To protect yourself, never click on suspicious links received through SMS, email, or WhatsApp. Do not respond to calls from unknown numbers.

Always report such fraud attempts on official platforms. Staying alert is the best way to avoid becoming a victim of such scams.
