Govt issues Alert for Smartphone users (Avoid Account Loss)

The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) has issued a major warning about a new type of cyber fraud targeting mobile users.

Fraudsters are misusing the call forwarding feature on phones—a feature meant to redirect calls to another number—to steal money and hack accounts.

This scam doesn’t require clicking on links or installing apps, which makes it especially dangerous.

Even a simple call or message can trigger the fraud.

How the Scam Works

The scam usually starts with a call or message from someone pretending to be a courier or delivery agent.

They claim a parcel is waiting for you or that there’s an issue with a delivery.

To “solve” the problem, they ask you to dial a USSD code, often starting with 21, 61, or 67.

Once you dial this code, call forwarding is activated.

This means all your incoming calls—including bank verification calls, OTPs, and alerts—are redirected to the fraudster’s phone.

With these calls and OTPs, fraudsters can easily:

Hack bank accounts

Access WhatsApp, Telegram, and other apps

Steal money or take over social media accounts

Victims often realize the fraud only after accounts are compromised or money is debited.

I4C Safety Warnings and Precautions

I4C emphasizes that this scam is dangerous because it exploits a legitimate mobile feature. Users generally don’t suspect call forwarding could be misused.

Cyber experts say fraudsters deliberately use common features to avoid raising suspicion.

If you suspect your call forwarding has been activated, immediately dial ##002#.

This code disables all call forwarding and restores your incoming calls to your phone.

Key Takeaways

Never dial unknown USSD codes sent via calls or messages.

Verify the sender before responding to delivery or courier messages.

Be aware that even a simple call or message can trigger a cyber fraud.

Regularly check your call forwarding settings and stay vigilant.

This alert highlights that cyber fraud is not just about technology—it’s about awareness. Staying cautious and informed can prevent significant financial and digital losses.
