To tackle the rising number of digital fraud and online scams, the government has been introducing new rules regularly. In this direction, it had introduced the SIM Binding rule for messaging apps such as WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal.

Earlier, the government planned to implement this rule from March 1, but the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has now provided major relief to these platforms.

The deadline for implementing the SIM Binding rule has been extended until December 31, 2026.

According to reports from Moneycontrol sources, the DoT started informing companies individually about this decision from March 30.

The main reason behind the extension is that these messaging platforms informed the government that they were facing several technical difficulties in implementing the new rule and requested more time.

The government has now accepted their request and extended the deadline.

Tech Companies Also Asked for More Time

Not only messaging platforms, but smartphone manufacturers and operating system providers like Google and Apple also requested additional time to implement the rule.

Apple, in particular, said that there are certain technical limitations in its iOS system, which make it difficult to implement the rule immediately. However, the company is actively working on a solution.

Under this rule, these apps will need to be designed in a way that they work only when the user’s registered SIM card is present in the same phone.

This means that if the SIM card is removed or replaced, the app may stop functioning.

How the SIM Binding Rule Will Work

The SIM Binding rule is meant to ensure that apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal remain linked to the SIM card installed in the user’s mobile device.

In simple words, the SIM card in the phone must be the same one that was used to create the account.

If the SIM is:

removed

replaced

deactivated

then access to the app may become limited, or the account may stop working completely.

The main aim of this rule is to ensure that every account is connected to a real and active mobile number, which can help reduce fake accounts and online fraud.

Why This Rule Is Important

This rule has become necessary because of the recent increase in online fraud, fake messaging accounts, and cybercrime.

Many people currently use messaging apps even without an active SIM card, which makes it difficult to verify or track their identity.

With the SIM Binding rule, every account will be directly linked to a valid mobile number. This will improve security, make it easier to identify users, and help prevent misuse of messaging platforms.
