President Draupadi Murmu delivered significant news today (27 June 2024) regarding the Ayushman Bharat scheme, especially for the elderly.
She announced that individuals above 70 years old will now receive free medical treatment under this scheme.
President Murmu shared this update during her address at the joint session of Parliament.
She also highlighted the ongoing rapid establishment of 25,000 Jan Aushadhi Kendras across the nation.
Emphasizing the government’s commitment, she mentioned that the Ayushman Bharat scheme currently covers medical expenses for 55 crore beneficiaries nationwide.
He announced that the government will soon implement another decision in this field.
Now, individuals aged 70 and above will receive free medical treatment under the Ayushman Bharat scheme.
The President emphasized that the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan has prioritized the health and well-being of the poor at a national level.
Notably, millions of toilets have been constructed for the first time for disadvantaged populations across the country.
The country’s biggest insurance plan
Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) is the world’s largest health insurance scheme, funded by the central government.
It provides health insurance of Rs 5 lakh annually for treatment to 12 crore impoverished families across the country.
President Murmu highlighted India’s promotion of ‘AYUSH’ (Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy) to foster global health.
Additionally, she mentioned a campaign aimed at popularizing India’s coarse grains, branded as ‘Shri Anna’, as a ‘superfood’ worldwide.
The President noted that India’s initiative led to the global celebration of the ‘International Millet Year’ in 2023.
Know what is Ayushman Yojana
The central government launched the Ayushman Bharat scheme in 2018. Beneficiaries receive an Ayushman card under this scheme, which allows them to avail free hospital treatment up to Rs 5 lakh.
This initiative primarily benefits the poor and economically disadvantaged citizens of the country.
Recently, the President announced that individuals aged 70 and above will also receive benefits under this scheme.
