Government Plans Hallmarking Rule for Silver Jewelry

The government is planning a big change for silver jewelry. From September 1, 2025, hallmarking on silver jewelry may be introduced.

For now, this rule will be voluntary, which means customers can choose to buy jewelry with or without a hallmark.

It will work the same way as the rule that was earlier introduced for gold jewelry.

What Will Change?

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has fixed six purity levels for silver: 900, 800, 835, 925, 970, and 990.

Every silver item will now get a 6-digit Hallmark Unique ID (HUID).

This HUID will clearly show the purity of the jewelry and whether it is genuine.

The new system will replace the older method of hallmarking.

What is Hallmarking?

Hallmarking means an official guarantee of the purity of precious metals like gold or silver. Under this system, metals are tested and certified by the government.

The BIS hallmarking scheme ensures that customers receive the quality they are paying for.

Benefits for Customers

Customers will be better protected from fraud, as non-hallmarked jewelry often carries a risk of adulteration.

With the new system, buyers can use the BIS Care App and verify the HUID on the spot to check if the hallmark is genuine.

This will give customers greater confidence and transparency while buying jewelry.

Similar Rule Already in Place for Gold

The government made hallmarking mandatory for gold jewelry in 2021.

Now, a similar step is being taken for silver jewelry to make the market more transparent and trustworthy.

After September 1, 2025

From this date, people will still have the option to buy hallmarked or non-hallmarked silver jewelry.

However, hallmarked silver is expected to gain more trust among customers. This will not only benefit buyers but will also increase credibility in the jewelry industry.
