There is good news for millions of vehicle owners across India. The Central Government is considering major changes to driving licence and vehicle-related rules that could make life much easier for drivers.
The main aim is to reduce the need for frequent visits to Regional Transport Office (RTO) branches and move more services online.
Two important proposals are currently under discussion — extending the validity of driving licences and making key vehicle services completely digital.
Driving Licence Validity May Increase Significantly
According to a report by The Times of India, the government is considering a proposal that would allow driving licences to remain valid until a person reaches the age of 50.
At present, a new driving licence is generally valid for 20 years, after which renewal is required. This often involves paperwork, document verification, and visits to the RTO.
Officials believe the proposed change could save people from repeated renewal procedures and make the system more convenient.
The move is part of the government’s broader effort to improve ease of living and simplify public services.
Vehicle Ownership Transfer Could Go Fully Online
Another major change may benefit people who buy or sell used vehicles.
The government is working on a digital system that could allow vehicle ownership transfers and permit renewals to be completed entirely online.
If approved, vehicle owners would no longer need to visit RTO offices for these services. Instead, the entire process could be completed from home using a smartphone, tablet, or computer.
This could make buying and selling vehicles faster, easier, and more transparent.
No Revenue Loss for State Governments
Some states had raised concerns that moving services online could affect government revenue.
However, officials have clarified that all licence and vehicle-related fees will continue to be collected through digital platforms. As a result, state governments are not expected to face any revenue loss.
The only major difference will be that citizens will be able to complete their work online instead of visiting government offices in person.
Stricter Action Against Traffic Rule Violators
While the government plans to make services easier for law-abiding citizens, it is also preparing stricter measures for traffic offenders.
Under the proposed system, drivers may receive negative points for traffic violations and challans. If a driver collects too many negative points, their driving licence could be suspended or even cancelled.
Officials believe this system will encourage safer driving habits and help reduce reckless behaviour on the roads.
If implemented, these changes could modernize India’s transport system, reduce paperwork, and make vehicle-related services faster and more convenient for millions of people.
